These lights are called locomotive indicators. Earlier the headlight was mounted on top of the locomotive. However, now the headlight has been shifted to the middle in the new engines.

The headlight fitted in the engine of the train is operated by DC current of 24volt. Its focus falls up to a distance of 350 meters. With the help of this powerful headlight, the loco pilot can see the railway track for a certain distance at night.
Why are there 2 bulbs?
Now let’s talk about how many bulbs are there in the headlight of the train? Actually, two bulbs are used in the headlight of the train. The special thing is that both these bulbs are connected in parallel. So that even if one bulb gets damaged on the way, the path can be seen with the help of another bulb.
Why red and white light?
In addition to the headlight in the locomotive, two lights of red and white color are also installed. When the engine has to be run in the reverse direction for shunting, then the red light is switched on. This lets the railway staff know that the locomotive is going in the opposite direction for shunting. Wherein, when it is forwarded for shunting, then the white colored light is turned on.
